Components of Bar Stool
Base & Incorporated Floor Protectors
The first part is the base, which is designed to keep the whole stool stable and varies in size with design. This can come as either a round conical base or a flat base; which are usually square but can be circular depending on the style of the stool. Whilst the coned shape helps round bases with stability, flat bases are a lot heavier and lower the center of gravity to counteract the seat above. The conical base has a rubber ring beneath that protects floor surfaces from scratches, and has a hole in the middle to accommodate the gas lift mechanism, whilst flat bases have felt pads below which offer excellent protection of more delicate flooring.
Collar & Gas Lift Column
Pictured below is a hydraulic gas lift mechanism that slots into the hole on the round base, where it locks into place with a compression joint for a solid construction. A decorative chromed collar is available on a number of styles, fitting between the base and gas cylinder to decorate the joint where the two parts meet for a trendier look. On flat bases, the hydraulic is held in place by a number or bolts, making a rigid connection that can be tightened with an Allen key. The hydraulic, which provides the stool with variable height and 360 degree swivel, is made up of two cylinders with a valve between that controls air flow, activated by a button on the narrower end. When this button is pressed, an unloaded hydraulic will expand to raise the stool, and when loaded will compress to lower it.
Footrest & Seat
These last 2 parts are probably the most interesting as they influence the overall styling, shape and comfort the most. Slotting over the top of the gas lift mechanism is the footrest, which is usually welded to a slender stem that protects the joint between the two parts of the gas lift. The footrest comes in a variety of designs, from half-moon shaped (pictured below), circular designs held by spokes to more designer squared and even triangular, that add visual impact. A number screw directly to the seat, such as the neck of the Coco bar stool, or the cascade footrest of the Cadiz. The top section also houses the lever that activates the hydraulic, depressing the button when pulled upwards. You will note that on the lower section, there is a nylon sleeve, in this case black. The function of this is to reduce friction between the footrest and column.
Finally, the bar stools are topped out by the seat, which is affixed to the footrest by four bolts and usually washers, making a secure and steady connection. Some seats have a pair of spacers that are placed between the front screw holes and the metal plate at the top of the footrest, increasing the gap between and giving the seat a slight incline. This is only showcased on some models however, enhancing the design and giving a more relaxing seating position.
The Difference between Bar Stools and Chairs
Contrasting Seat Heights
An obvious dissimilarity is their difference in height due to the varying locations they're intended to be used in. Meant for use at a table – whether in the kitchen, restaurant, home office or beyond - the majority of chairs are fixed at standard dining table height. Dining tables generally measure around 75cm from the ground, and therefore we recommend you choose seating somewhere in the 43-48cm range for a comfortable fit.
Conversely, bar stools are designed for use in a variety of environments, from nightclubs to beauty salons, to medical practices. Commercial bars are fairly high at 105cm and above, and therefore when used in these settings we'd advise a stool height of 75-80cm. Alternatively, stools can also be used in the home at the kitchen worktop and breakfast bar. Kitchen worktops measure approximately 90cm, and so for domestic use we'd suggest a seat height of around 65-70cm. For your convenience, our collection of kitchen stools have been handpicked for this setting.
Variation in Backrest Height
From three course dinner parties to homework sessions at the kitchen table, we're often sat on chairs for longer lengths of time than bar stools. What's more we sit on them in a different way, and hence our posture has helped to influence their design. As the tendency is to lean back and relax into a chair, they require a higher backrest for optimum support. Additionally, they typically have more padding and upholstery to ensure a comfortable seating experience when sitting for extended periods.
In contrast, a large backrest is not needed with bar stools as the inclination is to lean forward and rest our elbows on the bar. Nevertheless many customers appreciate a backrest, as seen in the Drift, or a minimalist low lip like on the Lulu for that extra feeling of security.
There is also an aesthetic reason for bar stools not having backrests that are too large, as if they had a high back like a chair they'd look very out of place. Not only would they take up more room, but they'd be visually crowding and you wouldn't be able to see over them to the bar or worktop area. Instead, stools are often more compact in size, shape and style, which suits their purpose beautifully. Yet it's worth noting that whilst chairs are generally bigger, they do provide a wider variety of stackable designs for neat and tidy storage.
Additional Stool Features
Whilst the majority of chairs are fairly standard in what they offer, bar stools come with an impressive range of added extras for state-of-the-art functionality to meet their differing purpose. First of all, a footrest is included to provide a supportive perch for the feet. This feature is not needed with chairs where your feet can reach the floor.
Central column framed stools will largely possess a gas lift mechanism for adjustable height, allowing each user to achieve the ideal seating position, whatever their size. Included with this is 360 degree swivel, making the seat easily accessible when getting on and off. Instead of having to move the entire stool away from the bar, which can be difficult if it's heavy, its enhanced mobility means you can simply swivel round without disturbing those around you.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Bar Stools

Measure Your Counter Height
When it comes to bar stools, the colour, style and feature choices are endless. The only real consideration you'll have to factor in is the height of your counter or bar space. In Australia, residential kitchen counters and commercial bars have standardised measurements, which are:
. 90cm for the kitchen bench
. 105cm for a commercial bar
That being said, anything old or DIY's may have different measurements, so it's best to grab the measuring tape just in case. Tall tables, kitchen islands and dining tables also all have varying heights.
Take height by measuring from the floor to the underside of the counter or bench. The height of your kitchen counter, for example, will determine how tall your counter height bar stools should be.
Determine the Ideal Bar Stool Height
Once you've figured out how high your counter or bar is, you're in the best position to choose a height for your bar stool. How high a bar stool should be will come down to counter height, the surface's intended purpose, and personal preference.
As a general guide, most people prefer between 20 and 30cm clearance between the top of a seating surface and the underside of a table, bench or counter. Remember that counter height is measured to the base of the surface, while bar stool height usually refers to the distance between the ground and the top of the seat. So, if your kitchen counter is 85cm tall, look for a bar stool that's around 60cm high. This should enable you to comfortably rest your elbows on your kitchen or dining surface, allowing you to eat, drink or work with ease.
When working outside of these guidelines, keep in mind that you may lose some functionality of your counter, bar or bench if your stool is either too low or too high.
Consider Bar Stool Size
From large, cushioned and backed bar stools to sleek and minimalist designs, there are bar stools in a whole range of sizes to suit any space. Some may prefer a larger bar stool with more sitting room for comfort, while others may opt for a few narrow stools for a more minimalist aesthetic. Your decision will come down to personal preference.
You'll also need to consider the size of your seating area before settling on bar stools. Keep in mind that chairs will ideally have 60cm of space between them to allow each person to move comfortably. In a 2m wide area, you may be able to fit three smaller sized stools, but only two larger seats.
Pick Your Bar Stool Colour, Comfort and Other Features
With height and size covered off, all there's left to do is to get shopping! Select the material, style, shape and colour of your stools and place them by the kitchen counter, bar, island or table. Here's a quick guide for all your styling options.
● Bar Stool Materials
Whether it's polished stainless steel or decorative rattan, your options for bar stool materials are plenty. Match the style of the rest of your furniture or change it up by choosing bar stools in a different material.
● Bar Stool Decor Style
Dreaming of a casual Scandi dining space? Or is mid-century style more up your alley? Spruce up your bar or kitchen counter space with bar stools in your choice of decor style.
● Bar Stool Shapes
Referring to the shape of the seat, bar stools come in a small variety of shapes to suit any preference and style.
● Other Bar Stool Features
From plush, tall backrests to bar stools with gas lifts, there are many bar and counter stool features to factor into your buying decision. Here are a few questions to ask throughout the buying process:
Do I want a backrest?
What colour do I prefer?
With arms or armless?
Does it need to be stackable?
Is adjustable height/gas lift important to me?
Do I need it to swivel?
If you're buying bar stools for the home, the decision to include or exclude these features will come down to personal preference, but it's a little trickier in a commercial setting. The ability to adjust the height of the stool may be important in a restaurant or bar, where patrons may have vastly different heights. If you'll be using it in a business environment, make sure your stool is commercial grade and designed to stand regular use.
